THE XTRI CANON

After more than a decade of races, mountains, weather and consequence, XTRI publishes the Canon. The definition of Extreme Triathlon

We Don’t Promote the Sport. We Define It.

The XTRI Canon

Extreme triathlon is defined by environment - not distance, pace, or spectacle.
Cold water, elevation, exposure, isolation, and weather are essential components, not variables to be neutralised.

Nature is the primary opponent.
The course does not protect the athlete from conditions. The athlete adapts - or fails.
Both outcomes are valid.

Mountains must be consequential.
They materially shape strategy, pacing, equipment, safety, and outcome.
They are not decoration.
They are not optional.

Self-sufficiency is fundamental.
Preparation, logistics, and problem-solving are part of performance.
Support may assist, but not replace responsibility.

Supporters are integral.
They share decision-making, consequence, and execution.
Their role is structural, not optional.

Difficulty is preserved.
Courses are not softened to protect completion rates.
Failure is an acceptable outcome.
Honest courses produce honest results.

Standardisation is resisted.
If an event can be mass-produced without compromise, it belongs elsewhere.
Authenticity outweighs growth.

The Canon is immutable.
Locations vary.
Conditions change.
The principles do not.

Any event claiming the title Extreme Triathlon is measured against this Canon.
